                                     Stare Him Down
                                              by Riley Murphy
                      GENRE: Contemporary Erotic Romance

Picture
This Dom’s life is turned upside down when he agrees to enter into a modern-day marriage of convenience with a woman who’s sassy and vanilla.

Only problem?

She’s not vanilla. And the side of sassy she comes with is sure to get them both into trouble when he finds out.

Picture
She closed her eyes and softly banged her head against the door. If she didn’t get the romantic ball rolling with him soon, her every chance with him could disappear. She hated having to throw Logan in the ring every time to get a reaction from James, but damn, how else could she…?

Suddenly another idea came to her.

She opened her eyes and looked down at the package. Did she dare?

The sounds of James moving around in the room next door cemented her decision. Absolutely. She’d do it.

In fact, by the time she’d washed up, unpacked the box of toys, and had given them a thorough going over, she’d convinced herself that James had really left her with no choice in the matter.

*
James got into bed and was determined to push thoughts of his in-name-only wife out of his mind. He was ready to count imaginary sheep, pennies, bouncing balls, real balls—damn—a picture of himself stationed quite happily between Michaela’s legs as he slammed into her over and over materialized—no.

“Think sheep. Count sheep. Sheep, sheep, sheep,” he whispered. Hoping to use this power of suggestion technique to his advantage. And it was working. He was slowly drifting off to sleep watching the…mechanical sheep? He tried to sink deeper into oblivion by overlooking the gears and metal parts that made the robotic animals leap effortlessly across the starlit landscape in his mind until...

He opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling. Why was he dreaming about mechanical—?

“Oooh…”

That soft moan woke him right up, and when he snapped into a sitting position he knew why he’d been dreaming about machines. Mickey had opened her package and if he didn’t miss his guess, that was a Hitachi humming away.

She has two phenomenal kids, one adorable-to-the-max grandchild, and a very bossy pooch.

When Riley’s not working she enjoys reading, oil painting, and getting to the Sunday crossword before anyone else does, so she can fill-in all the easy answers first, and pull the smart card with the family.

Things Riley loves:
Writing books
Connecting with readers
Doing giveaways for her readers

Things Riley Hates:
Laundry. Seriously. She’d rather slam her fingers in a car door than do the dreaded bleach load.

A few of Riley’s favorite reviewer quotes:
If you love intellectual mind candy, read Ms. Murphy’s work!
Creative, profound and soul searing scenes abound...
One wonders if Ms. Riley is in the sex therapy and marriage counseling business as a day job. The D/s part of this story is Fabulous.
If Riley wasn’t an author she’d be an international spy with top-level security so she could have a peek at Area 51 and decide for herself if those green guys are for real. Failing that, she’d likely go with chicken sexer.

Xen Lyson’s fingers moved to the pulse point of the woman lying at his feet. Skata! He swore internally. He should have guessed she’d come back for her partner. He’d have to leave her.
Take her. He jerked at the sudden possessiveness that demanded he acquire ownership. She’s yours.
His hand moved to her hair as he pushed the strands back from her face. The pads of his fingers deliberately caressed her cheek. His nostrils flared when the scent of her exotic blood hit his nose. He examined her without delay. A large bump and cut graced the back of her skull. He lifted his fingers to his mouth and tasted her blood. Ambrosia danced over his tongue and warmth spread through every cell in his body.
Dikia mou... she’s mine.
“Xen, we should move.” Kane Hart, his right hand man, brought him out of his strange musings and sudden infatuation. “Bring the truck. Get the clean team. Stack the demon bodies.”
His brow creased in contemplation at what would be the best course of action for the female and her partner. Taking her would risk exposing her to his world. He looked over her body again. Take her. He wanted to give in and do as his mind bid. “Leave these two untouched.”
As the leader of the Phi Athanatoi, an ancient specialist group of vampires and werewolves, he was sworn to protect humankind. Right now, leaving the woman and her wounded partner would be an act of protecting them from the Kakodiamones, the demons that walked amongst man. Bringing them into his world would only paint them as moving targets.
He stood and sheathed his double-edged xiphos. His acute senses picked up the strong smell of demons. Before he could turn, one descended upon him, blade in hand. He braced himself. The impact was inescapable. Slamming into his back, the demon knocked him forward.
“Vlaka!” Xen yelled.
He found his footing quickly, speed and skill on his side. Reaching for his sword, he readied himself for combat. The demon changed tactics when he saw Xen’s weapon. He stopped on the spot, trying to avoid his opponent’s blade.
Xen sneered and bore his fangs at the demon. A threat—one other creatures would acknowledge as to who held the power. The demon stood expressionless.
“Well, come and get me.” Xen coaxed. The demon didn’t move.
Statues...thicker than Greek marble. Xen didn’t need an invitation. His blade hissed through the air, cutting through the demon’s neck and spinal cord, severing his existence. Blood splattered on the already sticky floor. The head thudded on the ground while the body teetered for a second before it too slumped to the concrete.
Kane laid his boot into the beast. “Nice cut, Xen. The bastard didn’t have enough time to blink.”
The lykos let out a growl of satisfaction, but then his demeanor changed, his nostrils expanded at the scent of another demon headed in their direction. He turned in time and swung his double swords, severing the demon’s head, blood gushing over him.
“Damn! I just bought this jacket.” He gave the headless body a kick to let out his frustration. The body flew through the air and landed with a thud when it hit the wall on their right. “Dumbass! When will you demons get it?”
Xen smirked. His friend excelled at the combination of lethal and loyal.

Chapter 1

Deep within a hellish cavern, six towering beings merged from the depths of its heated core and gathered at the opening. They were beautiful creatures with physically striking features and the physiques of warriors, clothed to resemble the upper crust of the society they would soon infiltrate. Their eyes glowed with a fierce ember red against the backdrop of a darkening sky.
“It’s time we avenge our brother and bring this Council to its knees,” one of them hissed.
“Your arrogance will be the death of you, just like our brother, Luceph!” another answered with a sinister laugh.
“Levia, as the Master has told us, we must stop the boy first! Then we will have our revenge.” That line of reasoning was offered by one of the beings sitting on the ledge of a boulder at the entrance to the cavern.
“Modeus, you think you’re better than us?” Levia snapped at him.
In a calm and compelling tone, he answered, “It’s not that I’m better than you. We have a mission to see out.” He stood atop the boulder, looking down at the rest of them. “This child, who is now of age, has been delivered to abolish each one of us . . . and our Master. The first thing we must do is—”
“Kill him!” one of them interrupted.
Shooting him a deathly stare, he snapped back, “To befriend him!”
“You know he is trained to see who we really are,” Levia answered with a snarl.
“Yes, but we must only look at his friends and pick one who wants something only we can offer. Once we have chosen someone to betray him, then we will have our revenge.”
“And what can we offer this friend?”
“We simply give something back that’s been taken from them.” Modeus smiled.
“And I know the perfect person. I’ll handle it,” Levia replied. And before any of the others could respond, Levia vanished, leaving a brush of wind behind.
“He’ll be the next to die!” Modeus rolled his eyes.

***

Levia gathered two of his followers and descended on a small town nestled beside a tranquil lake in the Ozark Mountains, a town the six demons feared. Within this town rested the final graves that were intended for the six demons—and one grave that already held their brother.
“How appropriate that the Council chose this town for their savior to live,” one of Levia’s followers replied.
“We’ll have to pay Luceph a respectful visit before we leave,” Levia replied as the three of them walked unnoticed onto the grounds of the local high school. Invisible to the average eye, they wove their way through the busy halls of students and teachers, searching for the very person Levia wanted the most.
At the head of the pack, he held out a hand to stop his followers. “There!” He smiled and pointed to a student.
“That student doesn’t look like anyone who could help us.”
“Oh, yes, I’m sure of it. And with the right persuasion, I can make the feeling of being robbed intensify to the point of desperation.” Levia grinned and walked toward his next victim.

At the obscene beeping of an alarm clock, Micah hit the snooze button for the last time. Who in the world made the snooze time only nine minutes? he thought. He rolled out of his tangled sheets and sat up, placing his bare feet on a cold, hardwood floor.
It was unusually bright that early in the morning. Rubbing his face and opening his eyes, he could see the dust particles in the beam of sunlight shining through the mirror he had cracked while throwing a ball against the wall two weeks ago.
As he walked into his bathroom, his brown hair was a matted mess. He reached in the shower and turned on the hot water, instantly steaming up the small bathroom.
“Man, what a crazy dream. I hope today is better than yesterday, and who in the world was that redheaded girl?” he said to himself.
“Were you talking to me?” Gran asked while walking by his room.
“No, Gran,” Micah replied. Man, these old walls are too thin, he thought.
Looking into the fogged mirror, he wiped it clear with his hand, then studied the back of his shoulder, where several small scars created a larger circular scar. He had always thought they looked like teeth marks, but as he got older, he had begun to suspect other theories of how he got them—still, he couldn’t quite recall the memory.
He thought about yesterday. It’s always awkward being the new guy on the first day of school. Not that anything embarrassing happened, thankfully; actually, most kids didn’t think much about Micah as the new kid. Being a freshman is hard, but in a small town it’s even harder if you just moved in. And for Micah, he just moved in a few weeks ago, so having time to make friends before school started wasn’t viable.
Seven Springs is a quaint, small town nestled in the northern part of the Ozark Mountains. It sits on part of a tranquil blue lake that feeds into a cold river, attracting fishermen from all over the world. Being a retirement community, much of the town shuts down after 7:00 p.m., leaving the younger generations to fend for themselves for entertainment. A few fast-food joints, a small theater, and a bowling alley are about the only venues the retired town offers. Micah hadn’t adapted yet, and being from a big city where the nightlife was more active than the day, it was going to be a challenge.
He had lived in Tennessee most of his life. As an orphan, he couldn’t recall the first six years of his life but remembered vividly the day his adopted parents drove away from the orphanage with him in the backseat, gazing back at a half-dozen kids waving goodbye.
Micah’s adopted parents, Dale and Kelly Spearman, were regular entrepreneurs in the Nashville area and were quite successful for nearly a decade before the economy took a turn for the worst, especially for small business owners. After closing their business, they joined the mission field and moved to a small town in northern Greece. Micah, who had just turned fifteen, had the decision to go with them or move in with his grandparents. School was going to be hard enough with the Advanced Placement classes he had planned on taking, but starting over in a new country was out of the question. He decided it would be too much of a culture shock, especially since he was a little shy.
Being a natural at lacrosse, he was excited to play for Seven Springs High School, a three-time state champion in lacrosse, and with the lack of money in his family, lacrosse could easily pay his way to college. A dream of his was to play for a division-1 school. So with mixed emotions, he decided to stay in the States and pursue his dream of playing lacrosse in college.
Making his way into the dated kitchen, he said to Paw, “I wonder how Mom and Dad are doing moving into their new place.” Paw, Dale’s father, was a local preacher, a sturdy old man who was set in his ways but loved to spend time with teenagers and seemed to understand them.
“I’m sure they are getting along just fine. Dale has a unique way of recruiting help,” Paw replied.
“Don’t say it like he cons people into doing things, Duke,” Gran replied in a sweetly protective tone. Both Paw and Micah smiled at each other. “So what is on your agenda today after school?” Gran asked.
“I have workouts with the freshman team till four thirty, and maybe just hang out afterward,” he said with a mouthful of toast.
“Okay, just let us know where you are going to be,” Gran said.
“You better get a move on if you’re gonna be on time,” Paw said while picking up his paper.
“Oh, crap! I mean . . . well, you know.” Micah fumbled while grabbing his backpack. “I got to go. See ya.”
The high school was only a few blocks away, and Micah wondered if riding a bike would look too geeky. Other thoughts ran though his head about how hot it was, the need for a car soon, and lacrosse practice, but mostly the redheaded girl who smiled at him during lunch. He wondered who she was. There was something unique about her; it was almost like he knew her from somewhere.
A couple of guys strolled out on the sidewalk in front of him. One turned around and gave him a head nod. “What’s up?”
“Hey,” Micah greeted him back. They walked separately the rest of the way but once they got to the school property, the same guy asked Micah where he was from.
“Nashville,” he replied.
“Cool. Why did you move here?”
“My parents moved to Greece,” Micah said.
The boy stopped walking. “Hey, you’re the new lacrosse player we heard about!”
“I guess so,” Micah said with a shrug.
“I’m Tyler, and this is Jake; we play on the JV team. You ready for practice today?”
Jake was a stocky kid and bigger than most of the freshman boys Micah had seen yesterday. Tyler was tall and skinny with jet-black hair. Both boys were wearing athletic shorts with flip-flops. “Yeah, think so. Are there many guys on the team?” Micah asked.
“Maybe twenty; everyone will make the JV team but varsity cuts about half of the guys who try out. Our coach is pretty cool; sometimes he can be a jerk, but he’s cool,” Tyler replied, walking through the open back doors to the school.
“What do you have first period?” Jake asked Micah.
Micah reached in his back pocket for his class schedule. “World history with—”
“You have Mrs. Hedding; she’s senile.” Tyler laughed from inside the hallway.
“Find us at lunch. We sit near the back door in the cafeteria,” Jake said, walking to his class.
“Okay.” Thank you, God—normal guys.
Micah walked into Mrs. Hedding’s class looking for a chair, while thinking about what Tyler said about her.
“Jimmy, have a seat,” she said, glancing over her glasses at Micah.
Jimmy? A few students laughed as they overheard. News travels fast in a small town, and everyone knew Micah was the new transfer. They also all knew that Mrs. Hedding wasn’t good with names.
He sat down in front of the same blonde girl he had sat in front of yesterday and pulled his notebook out of his bag.
“Hi,” the blonde girl said.
“Hi.”
“Where did you move from?” she asked.
“Nashville.”
“Cool! What’s it like moving from a big city to our little danky town?”

“Miss Evans, please stop talking to Jimmy and get out your notebook,” Mrs. Hedding snapped. The class laughed again.
The blonde sat back in her chair and pulled out her books. “I’m Carrie,” she whispered back.
Micah overheard another girl to his left. “She’s trying to bag another guy. Can she have ‘I’m easy’ written any bigger on her forehead?” A few girls sitting nearby laughed. Micah didn’t hear a response or acknowledgment from Carrie on the comment and figured she didn’t hear them.
She seems nice, Micah thought.

This was a really exciting, intriguing read! Packed full of action, adventure and a little dash of sweet romance- I was captivated from beginning to end! The storyline was intriguing, the dialogue complex and the characters were very well developed. This classic adventure of good vs evil left me sitting on the edge of my seat and devouring the book as quick as I could! Even thought there's plenty of dark twists, the writer still keeps the story light-hearted and the sprinkling of sweet teen romance adds the perfect balance to this gripping adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed Micah and can't wait to check out the sequel when it comes out!!

To introduce myself, I was born and raised in Northwest Louisiana, just outside of Shreveport. I graduated from high school in 1989 and went to Monroe Louisiana for college. After my first year at NLU I decided (actually my parents did) I wasn’t ready for college, so I did what every 19 year old kid does….I moved to the Marshal Islands in the mid pacific. After a few years I came home, meet my wife and settle down for a short bit. I worked construction, opening my own sporting goods store, became a full-time fireman, opened a candle manufacturing company, and even rodeo for a short term. Just not at the same time. In 2003 we moved to Franklin TN were I sold fire trucks until 2010 and moved to Heber Springs AR. Since here in the Ozark Mountains I have written six novels and currently working on my seventh, another YA novel. So that’s me in a quick whirl wind. And yes, if you check out my web site or social media you will see me with our pet raccoon, Tucker.

About The Author

JA

Hi there! When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My favourites are always originals featuring strong male and female protagonists with attitude. Benedict is detached and an enigma until he meets Siena. She turns his world upside down and he suddenly reconnects. I can’t tell you how many readers tell me how they were gripped by their story. How they loved the originality of the Braille Club and the other two stories running through it. The book has a great mix of characters! The Braille Club Series books are an interesting blend of genres. Although sensuality plays a big part, there is also intrigue and a touch of thriller. I'm a dreamer, writer and wine drinker and not always in that order. With the publication of my books, I realised my ultimate dream of becoming a writer. This has been a rollercoaster ride with lots of highs and lows but I’ve loved every crazy second. My next adventure is into script writing where I hope to transform my book into a drama series. I love to connect. Be sure to drop by FB page or sign up to my newsletter http://bit.ly/1RawSm3 for exclusive giveaways, secret chapters and upcoming events. “So?” Aaron nudged him again. “Which one lights your candle?” He grinned. “You’ve got to admit, there are some beautiful men in there.” He nodded toward one young man standing nearest the window. He was stroking down over his chest and well-defined abs, to where a thick cock jutted out toward them. Just then the young man turned and bent over, reaching back to spread his cheeks and reveal a pink, glistening hole, clearly lubed. He wiggled his ass, his dick bobbing stiffly.
Aaron smothered a chuckle. “Wow. He’s eager.”
That wasn’t the word in Mitch’s mind. He preferred blatant, and it wasn’t turning him on. In fact, none of them were.
“This is a mistake,” he said quietly. “Thanks for bringing me here, but honestly, this isn’t me. And there isn’t one guy who does it for me.” His gaze swept across the room, taking in the smiling, pouting faces and….
Mitch stopped, his pulse quickening. “Him.” How did I miss him?
Aaron peered in the direction of Mitch’s stare. “Which one?”
At the back of the room was a small table and a couple of armchairs facing each other. In one of them sat a young man with long, black hair tied in a single braid down his back. He was Japanese in appearance, with small, round glasses perched on his nose. Physically he was slight, not that tall as far as Mitch could tell. Unlike the others, he wore a pair of jeans and a white shirt.
What caught Mitch’s attention was the fact that he was reading a book, his legs curled up under him, lost in his own world.
“Mitch?” Aaron pinched his arm.
“Hey!” Mitch grumbled, rubbing the spot near his elbow. “What was that for?”
“You were off in cloud cuckoo land.” Aaron cocked his eyebrows. “Well? I repeat, which one?”
“The one with the book.” There was something so delightfully incongruous about him that Mitch was intrigued.
“Really?”
Mitch dragged his gaze away to give Aaron a firm stare. “You said to take my pick, so I pick him.” He couldn’t account for the way his body reacted to the young man. His heart pounded and his mouth was dry.
“That’s Nikko. He’s new here.”
Mitch turned toward the speaker. A dark-haired man wearing a black suit and matching shirt smiled at him. “My name is Randy. I’m here to give you any information you require.” He gave a flick of his head toward the window. “Nikko only joined us recently. Would you like to meet him, and if so, for how long?”
His heart still racing, Mitch regarded the young man who was oblivious to his surroundings. “An hour?”
Beside him Aaron chuckled. “And that’s my cue to leave.” He patted Mitch on the arm. “Enjoy, with my blessing. You can tell me all about it on Monday.”
“Thanks, Aaron.” Mitch gave him a warm smile. “And as for Monday? Uh-uh.” The smile became a grin. “I don’t kiss and tell.”
He snorted. “Spoilsport. And you have nothing to thank me for yet.” Aaron grinned. “See ya.” He walked toward the door and gave one last wave before disappearing through it.
Mitch returned his attention to Randy, who was regarding him with a hint of amusement. Mitch cleared his throat. “I’m sorry, I’m new to all this.”
Randy’s smile widened. “Then you and Nikko have something in common. Do you have your card?” Mitch held it up and Randy peered at it. “Okay, that’s fine. If you’ll come with me, please?”
He led Mitch through the door at the end of the lounge. They were in a long hallway with doors on either side. Randy escorted Mitch to door number seven and opened it. The room was small, but what it lacked in size, it made up for in furnishings. In the corner was a Chinese painted screen and a washbasin with a thick towel hanging from a rail beside it. Most of the space was taken up by a bed adorned with white sheets, a soft gray comforter, pillows, and cushions. A wide chair faced the bed, its cushions deep. There were no windows. At the head of the bed was a large mirror, and beside it, a small cabinet with two drawers.
“You’ll find condoms and packets of lube in the cabinet,” Randy said. “You’re aware of the club’s strict safe-sex policy.”
Mitch nodded. He had no problem with that. He’d never had bareback sex in his life.
“There are also some toys, should you require them. If there’s something particular you’d like, simply ask. We do cater for those clients who are into S&M, but they generally stipulate their needs ahead of time. Would that be of interest to you this evening?”
Mitch was sure his face was bright red. “Uh, not for me, thank you.”
Randy gave a polite nod. “Then I shall go and bring Nikko to you.” He exited the room.
Mitch gazed around him while he removed his jacket. He placed it on the chair and examined the prints on the wall. The room was definitely nothing like he’d expected; he’d had something much more austere in mind. A glance behind the screen revealed a toilet, tastefully hidden from view.
They really do think of everything.
Mitch scanned the walls and corners for any sign of a camera. Nothing. But from a safety aspect alone, he knew there had to be one in there somewhere.
Damn, they’re good.
He came back to the bed and sat, bouncing on it to test its springiness.
“Are we to be using it as a trampoline?” a soft voice asked.
Mitch jerked his head toward the door just as it closed gently. Nikko stood there, his fingers laced together in front of him, dark brown eyes focused on Mitch, his braid not visible, his expression impassive.
Mitch coughed and rose to his feet. “Maybe not.” He took a few steps toward Nikko, his hand extended, his belly tensed. Inwardly he cursed his uncertainty. It wasn’t as if he was a stranger to meeting guys, but after two years of being in a relationship, he felt decidedly out of practice. And this was definitely a new experience.
Nikko took his hand almost shyly and shook it, his fingers cool to the touch. “I’m Nikko.” The handshake over, he laced his fingers once more and stepped back, maintaining his distance from Mitch. His manner had Mitch retreating too.
“Is that your real name, or just one you use here?” Mitch wanted to know. When Nikko raised his eyebrows, Mitch felt the warm flush that rose up his chest and neck. “I’m sorry. This is my first time in a… in one of these places.”
Nikko became still for a moment, tension evident in his posture. When he smiled, it didn’t reach his eyes. “Then we have something in common. And to answer your question, Nikko is my real name. May I know yours?” Those eyes were captivating, a rich, deep brown framed with long, sooty black lashes, and set in a pale, unblemished face.
“I’m Mitch.” It was on the tip of his tongue to say Pleased to meet you, but the words sounded wrong given the circumstances. I don’t suppose there are etiquette rules for greeting a hooker in a brothel.
Not that Nikko resembled his preconceptions of what a hooker looked like. The young man was beautiful, maybe five foot five, six max. He felt tiny next to Mitch’s five foot eleven. Those clasped fingers were slim, his hands delicate. Mitch was reminded of one of his mother’s ethereal porcelain figurines in her china cabinet back home. They shared that same fragile quality.
“Are… are you feeling awkward too?” Nikko asked, biting his bottom lip. “You’re my first… client.” A flush crept across his cheeks and his ears turned red.
His words stirred something in Mitch’s chest, an absurd desire to enfold Nikko in his arms, to protect him. The yearning took him by surprise. Maybe it was Nikko’s slight build, his fragility, that engendered the inclination. Whatever it was, it sent a rush of warmth through Mitch’s body.
He beckoned to Nikko. “Come here.”
Slowly Nikko walked over to him, his gaze fixed on Mitch’s face. He stopped a few feet in front of him and tilted his chin up, not quite meeting Mitch’s gaze. The rapid rise and fall of Nikko’s chest, the ragged breathing, betrayed the nerves he hid. Mitch stretched out his hand to cup Nikko’s face, his large hand exaggerating the diminutive young man’s size.
“How old are you?” Mitch asked quietly. Nikko had to be barely legal.
“I-I’m twenty-two,” Nikko said in a low voice that cracked. “I know how I look, Mitch. I’m old enough to work here. This may be my first time with a client, but I’m not a virgin.”
“I never thought for a second that a virgin would be working here,” Mitch admitted. He tilted his head. “You can come closer, you know. I won’t hurt you.”
Nikko swallowed, blinking. “I… I’m sorry. It’s just that you’re not how I expected a client to be.”
Mitch took a step closer. “How did you think I would be?” He kept his voice low and soothing. Nikko reminded him of a colt he’d spent time with on his uncle’s farm as a boy. The young man gave an impression of being about to bolt at any second.
Nikko took a deep breath. “I didn’t expect to be treated with so much… respect.”
Now Mitch got it. “Come closer,” he said, coaxingly. When Nikko hesitated, Mitch gave him a warm smile. “Nikko, I meant it. I will not hurt you. I don’t have it in me to do that.”
Nikko regarded him in silence. “I believe you.” He inhaled slowly and took that last step to bring him to Mitch.
Mitch couldn’t help himself. He bent his head lower and took Nikko’s mouth in a gentle kiss. Nikko held himself still for a moment longer before putting his slim arms around Mitch’s neck and responding, his lips parting.
When Mitch broke the kiss, Nikko looked up at him with shining eyes. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
Nikko smiled, this time genuinely. “For being gentle.” His breathing hitched. “You… you make this easier than I thought it would be, Mitch.”
Mitch’s first reaction was a surge of pleasure, until a thought nagged at him. He paused, his hands on Nikko’s shoulders. “Are you here because you want to be?” Something about Nikko’s choice of words tugged at his mind.
Nikko regarded him, face calm. “I chose to be here, Mitch. Have no doubt about that.” There was no trace of deception in his voice or expression. He reached up with both hands and cupped Mitch’s face. “Kiss me again?” His Adam’s apple bobbed.
“Are you asking because you want to be kissed or because you feel you should ask?”
Nikko stared at him, lowering his hands, his eyes wide. “You are… perceptive.”
Mitch shrugged. “I use my eyes, is all. If you’d rather we sit on the bed for a while, maybe chat, that’s okay, I don’t mind.” He waited for Nikko to make the next move. The young man was skittish enough without Mitch making matters worse.
Nikko’s breathing grew more even. “Then I should like you to kiss me, because”—he stroked Mitch’s cheek, the touch light, and for the first time, he looked Mitch in the eye—“because I want you to.”
Mitch smiled. “That’s better.” He caressed Nikko’s cheek, brushing his fingertips over his cheekbones. “Because I want to kiss you.”
Nikko closed his eyes, lips parted, waiting.
Fuck. Nikko was beautiful.

An even bigger discovery waited in the wings—writing about men in love was even hotter….

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career. The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

And as for those men in love that she writes about? The list of stories just waiting to be written is getting longer… and longer….

Nancy Scanlon continues the timebending saga she began with The Winter Laird, pulling heroes and villains alike through the portals of time to help save their futures and find their truest loves.

A time travel accident has left Aidan MacWilliam, younger brother of a medieval Irish laird, trapped in the future. Though he’s become a successful entrepreneur in the twenty-first century, Aidan still can’t banish thoughts of the world he left behind. In search of distraction, he heads to New York to scout a PR person for his cousin’s matchmaking firm, Celtic Connections.
Emmaline Perkins might be the perfect candidate. A PR expert and closet medievalist, Emma has always put work before her social life. When a breathtakingly handsome man who looks like he stepped straight out of the Middle Ages proposes business, she struggles to keep her professional and personal lives separate.
Then Emma's ex-fiancé resurfaces, threatening Emma’s livelihood, her home, and ultimately her safety. Aidan jumps to protect her and not just because she’s good for business. He feels a primal need to defend the alluring young woman. But the question is not where she'll be safe, but when.

He stopped directly in front of her, his body inches from hers, and slowly leaned in. Emma’s breath hitched, and her body went on full alert, her senses hyperaware of him. His clean scent filled her nose, and his nearness made her knees turn to jelly. When her eyes locked on his clean-shaven face, it took every fiber of her being not to rise up on her toes and run her tongue along his jawline.
His eyes met hers, and she saw it—raw hunger. As he raised his hand slowly, she parted her lips, hoping for a second taste of Aidan MacWilliam.
The sound of something rustling above her head forced her to look up.
Aidan brought a bag of coffee down to the counter and trapped her between his arms.
She couldn’t move. She didn’t want to move.
They stood like that for a long moment before he shook his head a little, as if questioning his sanity, before he placed his hand on her jaw, tugged it open, and melded his firm lips to hers. Her eyes fluttered closed of their own accord, and she was suddenly enveloped in his arms, his hand stroking her neck. He cradled her head and flicked his tongue to hers. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and brought them up to his neck, as he kissed her gently, carefully, as though she would break.
She sighed softly and leaned into him, and he growled into her mouth. Aidan kept one hand in her hair, his fingers gentle, and pressed his other hand into the small of her back, bringing her body flush with his. He deepened the kiss, devouring her in the best of ways. Emma felt cherished, branded, and hot all over.
She pressed into him harder, and he slid his hand up her spine, sending chills throughout her overheated body. She ran her fingers through his hair, surprised at its softness. He drew her attention away from wandering thoughts, though, when, without breaking the kiss, he grasped her waist and lifted her onto the counter. He angled her head and kissed her as though his life depended on it.
She lost all coherent thought.
His hands were on her back, her shoulders, her hair, her legs. She dragged her hands up his abs, feeling the ridges of muscles and flesh; she wanted to tear his shirt off and kiss him everywhere, all at once.
“Ahem.”
Dimly, she registered that someone was standing on the other side of the island, and she tried to disengage from Aidan.
“Kitchen’s closed,” Aidan said, his voice rough. He rested his forehead against Emma’s.
“Let me know when it’s open, all right? I need some coffee before I start working,” Colin replied, the grin in his voice unmistakable. A few seconds later, a door opened and closed.
They looked at each other for a moment, breathing hard, and didn’t say anything. Aidan flicked his gaze to her lips, and kissed her hard and deep before pulling away. “I won’t apologize for that.”
More confused than ever, she glared at him. “I don’t know whether to slap you or…or…”
His green gaze locked on her for another moment, and he let out a sudden chuckle. “Christ, Emma, what you reduce me to. Kissing you in my cousin’s kitchen.”
“That felt more like ravishing,” she snapped before she could stop herself. She slid off the counter.
He brought his body against hers once more, and she cursed herself for freezing in place. He leaned down, his mouth on her ear, and ran his tongue along it. “Then you’ve never been properly ravished,” he whispered.

Yes! The sexy men are back! I swear, the author definitely has the knack for writing about perfectly masculine men that make me sigh in longing! The story continues 8 years after the first book ended, but it takes a new turn with scorching hot Aidan adjusting in modern times and finding his true lady love. While I enjoyed the first book a little more just because I adore historical fiction, this book was definitely still captivating and I was completely absorbed from beginning to end! The storyline was very original and extremely well written with plenty of sweet romance and just the right amount of suspenseful action thrown in. The characters were very well fleshed out and realistic with complex dialogue and palpable emotions. I absolutely enjoyed this thrilling read that made me ache to meet one of these brogues myself! I can't wait to see what the next book in this series might bring!!

AP new - excerpt.jpg

“The light in the window,” he said. “I took it as a sign you wanted to talk.”

Zara didn’t like to confess her vulnerabilities to anyone, so she averted her eyes. “I got scared,” she confessed in a whisper.

Irritation erased every confusion from his attitude. “You think that gives you the fucking right to summon me?”

Her fleeting smile probably suggested her appreciation. “You’re still watching me.” She sighed at the comfort that came with that knowledge. He hadn’t abandoned her, even though she’d said he would get nothing from her. Impressed by the strength of his character, she was astonished that he valued her safety. No man from her past had put her before personal gain.

His stoic form barely moved but she registered the increasing heat in his gaze and that hunger cleared her earlier turmoil and replaced it with a completely new priority. Raven was here. She was safe. She could relax. No one would be able to hurt her now. Emotion shifted to explore the lust he examined her with and Zara was ready to do whatever it took to quench her own desire.

Raven was her deepest, darkest fantasy. A man so powerful and proficient, it wasn’t just his prowess that made her heart beat faster and her core swell. Staring into him, she parted her lips and begged without words for an explanation as to why he was still stalking her.

“Not for the mission,” he said.

Squeezing her grip, she tested the strength of his unyielding muscles with her delicate fingers. “If it’s not for the job, then why are you watching me?”

His eyes narrowed further and in the oppression of this night, a frisson of fervor stoked her gut and made her breasts grow heavy. “You know damn well why,” he snapped.

The force of his kiss thrust her head back, but that harsh passion made her feel desirable, like he was starving for her and unable to control himself. Making a man like Raven lose control gave her power. He was her guard and her savior. Somehow, he managed to lift her up, and made her feel significant—able to take on the world.

He scooped a hand under her skull to compel her mouth to his, giving him leave to direct her head and her mouth to where he wanted them. The size of his hand encompassed all of her skull and with every move, his fingers tangled deeper in her locks. The sting of snagged strands and the mesh of matted hair were contrasted by the scorching desperation of his mouth and the assuredness of his tongue.

Balling his hand into a fist, he used his grip on her hair and the arm he clamped around her ribs to haul her onto her feet. Without breaking their kiss, he dipped down to snag her thigh with one hand and while hooking it high over his hip, he kept the momentum of their kiss going.

Caught up in the passion of their oral joining, she only knew they were in the bedroom when he sat on the bed, then lay down, urging her body forward to double it over his.

Kissing him was the most overwhelming experience of her life. The bulk of his tongue was in proportion to the girth of his body. Yet, as bold as he was, there was something consoling about his assertive mouth tasting hers.

The heady merging of their saliva was like swopping a reefer mid-draw or using the same coke straw. Without combining the drugs they each possessed, they couldn’t reach the optimum high. For the first time, they experienced the right dosage for maximum impact and she felt like she’d been sucker punched by Venus.

Spanking her ass with a loud thwack, he yanked his hand out of her hair. “Grab a rubber,” he said, nodding toward the nightstand without breaking eye contact.

God, he was arrogant. A couple of kisses and he thought they were going to have sex. But that steadfast confidence heightened her desire until she felt overwhelmed by his testosterone, which dragged her further under his spell. As she looked through the night into his fathomless eyes, she knew she was going to do it. This man was thrilling. He was dangerous and mysterious, and completely wrong for her in every way. But, damn, he made her feel good.

This was a man who a woman wouldn’t get a chance with often. He was so capable and skilled in arts that before him, she had no idea were out there. Raven lived life on the edge, in the night, and she had a sense that he needed the light in her as much as she desired his darkness.

Neither of the two cars are parked on the ground level, so, as we wait for one to come down, I can’t resist pivoting for another look at the opulence of the lobby. A moment later, a soft chime sounds behind me as the elevator comes to a rest. I wheel back around and step toward the doors as soon as they slide open. I don’t even register that the wall I’m facing is human until I’ve almost crashed right into him. I stop short and lift my head with a half-formed apology on my lips. The sound evaporates on my tongue as I glance up and my gaze collides with a pair of cerulean blue eyes. They skewer me from under the slash of inky black brows. Brows that are furrowed into a deep scowl at the uncouth clod who nearly body-slammed her way onto the elevator. “Um, sorry.” No reply from him. Not even a flicker of polite response in his handsome, sharply cut features. Under a crown of dark hair that’s neatly trimmed, fit for a boardroom, but thick with rebellious waves that catch the light in a glossy, raven’s wing sheen, his face is a blending of hard, chiseled angles. With his high cheekbones and square jaw, I’d be tempted to call his face brutal if not for the supple line of his mouth. And he’s tall and muscular too, dressed in a dark gray track jacket and pants that do little to disguise the physically fit body within. Despite his athletic appearance, I can tell immediately that he’s not some meat-head gym rat who’s more brawn than brain. No, this man’s eyes blast me with the kind of intelligence and seriousness—a powerful confidence—that I can’t ignore. A shocking and inexplicable heat pours through me as he holds my gaze. His stare is bold, unflinching, as if he’s accustomed to taking his fill of anything in his sights. That air of assumption should offend me for many reasons, but as his brilliant blue eyes travel the length of me, all I feel is the rapid igniting of every cell in my body. Tasha clears her throat when my muteness appears to be permanent. “Pardon us, please.” He barely acknowledges her comment, nor her huff of indignation that follows. No, those piercing eyes staying rooted on me alone. I feel stripped bare under that hard gaze, as if he can see right through me with a single glance and knows I don’t belong here. Even worse, the barely imperceptible twist of his lips seems to say that he’s very much aware of the effect he has on me. He doesn’t move, then I am mortified to realize it’s because I’m standing in his way. I wince inwardly and step aside, wishing I would just melt into the crack between the marble floor and the elevator shaft before I embarrass myself any more. His path cleared, he steps into the lobby without a word. I follow Tasha into the elevator, but all of my attention is on the dark-haired stranger now prowling across the marble with fluid, almost urgent strides. I hear Manny greet him as the elevator doors slide shut, blocking my view. “Evening, Mr. Baine. Enjoy your run, sir.” Once we’re sealed inside the car, my breath leaks out of me on a groan. Tasha arches a brow. “Hot as sin, but obviously a superior prick. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of that one, honey.” As if I need the warning. Whoever he is, I doubt I’ll be seeing much of Mr. Baine. In fact, I’m already promising myself I’ll head in the opposite direction if I ever see him in the building again while I’m here. God knows, I don’t need to relive tonight’s awkward semi-introduction with the man anytime soon. I push the button for the fifth floor, wishing it was as easy to push the memory of those searing blue eyes from my mind.   Lara Adrian Bio: lara-selfie-11-2015 LARA ADRIAN is a New York Times and #1 internationally best-selling author, with nearly 4 million books in print worldwide and translations licensed to more than 20 countries. Reconciling the mind and heart often provokes inner conflict. Throw in the whims of an emerging inner she-wolf entering her first heat cycle and the revenge demands of an ancient blood curse, and all bets are off! All Milena wants is to rescue her brother and return to her life in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, her situation in Brazil grows increasingly complicated as she uncovers more startling truths kept from her since birth–leaving her at a loss as to whom to trust and what to believe. Caught in the crosshairs of a vicious blood feud between two rival covens, Milena finds that guarding her heart is no simple feat … not when it’s the fearsome heart of an ill-fated blood curse that’s blossoming to life within her–threatening to unlock a long-prophesied reign of darkness upon the world with the power to destroy them all.

About Hettie Ivers

Hettie Ivers is a dedicated office drone by day and a smut storyteller by night. In early youth Hettie indulged in excessive Barbie doll play with her sisters where the complex, character-driven, twisty plot lines often went on for days and frequently involved gratuitous lava explosions, jetpack rescue missions, and very racy scenes between Babs and Ken. Over time she ditched the lava and the jetpacks. Hettie favors stories in which realistic, relatable characters must navigate fantastical, larger-than-life circumstances. She’s a sucker for sexy antiheroes, underdogs, and flawed protagonists, and she enjoys fresh spins on classic tropes with a sprinkling of satire.
