Sun and Moon
Desiree Williams
Publication date: April 28th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

There is nothing in life that eighteen year old Zara craves more than her freedom. Stolen from her home in Cadrebia at the age of eight, Zara has spent more years than she cared to admit as a slave to the Tankadesh courts. Her days are filled with protecting the princess, while she spends nights entertaining the king and his officials with her mastery of weapons. Any spare moment in between, she plots escape.

Yet her hopes for freedom come to a crashing halt when a stranger arrives bearing the mark of her assigned lifemate, and he threatens war if she isn’t turned over into his care. But a lifemate is not part of the plan. Her dreams, of choosing her own path and being the master of her own will, weaken as her Moon seeks to claim his Sun.

Is it possible that this stranger, with gentle blue eyes and a ready smile, didn’t come to be her new master? That there could be more to his tale?

Zara soon finds that neither her captivity nor her parents’ deaths were mere random attacks. And by returning to Cadrebia, she may have put the future of the royal line—and her Moon—in jeopardy. While Zara breathes in her first taste of freedom, her enemies move in, seeking to rob Cadrebia of its blessed prophecy.

To keep what she holds dear, Zara must rise above the pain and uncertainty to claim the lifemate assigned to her, or more than her freedom will be stolen this time.

EXCERPT:

“What’s going on here?” Dareh dismounted from his horse and with long purposeful strides worked his way toward them. His green eyes blazed. His jaw was set. Zara would hear about this later, but for now she would welcome his rescue.

The captain of the guard surveyed the scene. He closed his eyes briefly—probably praying for patience not to strangle her—and clamped a hand on her shoulder.

“I swear, Zara,” Dareh whispered low into her ear. “You attract trouble like a siren.”

She opened her mouth with a rebuttal, but Dareh narrowed his eyes, silencing her on the spot.

“Get to the palace before you’re recognized by my men. If Melchior learns you’ve been outside the palace walls you’ll spend the night in the flogging yard. Go. Take Essie with you. I’ll sort things out here.”

Zara opened her mouth once more, but a prickling over her palm stopped the words from flowing. Heat traced the lines of her mark. Goosebumps dotted her flesh. She shivered despite the heat from the desert sun. Oh, no. Please, no.

“May I be of some assistance?”

She jerked at the rich baritone that came from behind her. The world fell away in that moment. The merchants cursing over their loss were gone. Dareh’s men waving or shouting at the crowd gathered around them—gone. Even poor Essie, standing with her jaw dangling like a loon, faded.

Zara’s senses zoned in on the man behind her. She curled her fingers to close over the crescent shaped mark that had begun to throb. Her mind screamed for her to run. Her heart was all but having a seizure. But her feet somehow managed to turn her stunned body.

Pale blue eyes were the first thing she noticed. They reminded her of the moon with a ring of dark night around them. Sun-kissed skin followed with a splash of scruff along a strong jaw. Deep brown locks fell over his forehead and touched the tips of his ears.

“Hello, my Sun.” Full lips curved into a smile, revealing perfect teeth. And just like that, all their hopeful plans for escape blew away like grains of sand on the desert floor.

Her heart crumpled.

Would she ever be free?

Killian stepped forward, forcing her to tilt her head back to look up at him. He still seemed so big to her. He still overwhelmed her. But he didn’t frighten her anymore.
“You look tired.” She fought the urge to lift her hand to touch his gorgeous face.
“I am,” he said, the corner of his lips turning up in a half smile.
“Oh.”
He stared down at her, his half smile slipping. A dizzying parade of emotions swirled through his eyes. She couldn’t read them all, but she understood enough. He felt as torn as she did.
“Will I remember you three years from now?” she whispered, her heart aching with the fear that she would forget him as she had so much else…and with fear that she would remember him. That she would survive this nightmare and he would haunt her for the rest of her days like so much else did.
“Do you want to remember me?” He took another step in her direction.
“I don’t know.”  She frowned, confused. “You make me feel like maybe the world isn’t so bad. Like maybe I’m safe with you. I don’t think I want to forget that.”
Killian tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her cheek gently in one big hand. “You are safe with me. I won’t let anyone hurt you, Aubrey.”
She stared at him for a long, silent moment. He’d promised before that he wouldn’t hurt her, but even then an unspoken fear had stood between them like a wall. A little voice whispered that if she got too close, he would hurt her as badly as the things in her past hurt. That voice had stopped whispering when he’d kissed her today, and wasn’t that odd?
“You hurt me today.”
He bowed his head, letting his hand fall away from her face. “I’m sorry.”
Her heart ached a little at the agonized way he said it. As if it shamed him to know he’d hurt her. As if, maybe, he cared more than he should too.
“Why did you?” she asked, not accusing, but curious. She wanted to understand him. No, she needed to understand him on some level she couldn’t even explain to herself. “You wanted me, didn’t you?”
His gaze sought hers, honesty shining from his angel-bright eyes. “More than you know.”
Aubrey took a deep breath, letting her lungs fill with air even as her heart filled with his confession. And just as quickly, the buoyant feeling vanished. “It doesn’t change anything, though, does it?” she whispered.
“Do you want it to?”
She hesitated for a long moment, unsure. And then her shoulders slumped, the breath she’d taken expelling in a long sigh. “I’m sorry.”
Killian gave her a sad smile and reached for her again. He swept a finger beneath her eye, collecting the teardrop she hadn’t even realized had fallen. “No apologies,” he whispered, bringing his finger to his mouth. He stuck out the tip of his tongue and lapped that single bead of moisture from his fingertip. “You owe me nothing.”
If that was true, why did she feel like crying?

Guest Post! Interview with the Author

The Recipe Fairy-Guest Post A.C. Land
Why I started writing…
I always wanted to write a book, but I never imagined I’d be able to finish one. It’s funny because I hear people say that now and I think ‘yes, yes you can.’ The real reason I decided to finally sit down a start—and ultimately finish—a novel was because of a terrible car crash.
Is that cliché? To say that a near death experience changed the course of my life?
I was 22 and college was as boring as it is for any 22-year-old. My accident happened. I was in the passenger seat of my own car and the roof had to be cut off so I could be taken out. I broke several bones and probably should have been hurt worse than I was. But I stood up and walked out of the emergency room that night.
The next day I wrote the first five chapters of my first book.
I thought, if I had died, what would people remember me for. Being the girl that died in the passenger seat—not even driving—her own car. That’s not very awesome. I’m fairly nice to people, so maybe they’d have remembered me for that. That’s not real cool either.
The more I wrote, though the more I realized that I wasn’t doing it to be remembered after I died. I was doing it to live. A piece of my soul was sucked into every page. I can’t say how many books I’ve actually written, but I wrote the entire (seven books) Bourbon Series before ever pitching them to BookFish Books.
I can honestly say that almost all of the books that are locked in the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet are called ‘Bourbon’ in some form or another. Bourbon is a small highway town in Missouri—really, it is. I grew up down a little dirt road just outside of city limits. I love everything about this place. I love the smells in summer—like river and honeysuckle. I love the feel of mud after driving a windowless Jeep too fast through a wet ditch. I love the taste of the first tomato in July.
But growing up I noticed that I was one of the very few that appreciated the art that was Bourbon. Everyone wanted out. It’s an opportunity-less town. The economy has shown itself here and the farms aren’t what they used to be.
Where did I get the inspiration for the Bourbon Series? I made it up. I imagined a world where Bourbon was fantastic and fake. Then I got out a pen and I created something that wasn’t.

My Thoughts

Four Chambers is a poignant tale of second chances and self-discovery. I was completely caught up with the main character, Charlotte and sympathized with the trials she had to face. Reading this book took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. There were times that I wanted to just give her a big hug, times I chuckled to myself and even a few times that made my heart cry with sympathy. There's a light layer of paranormal essence threaded throughout the whole book that adds a delightful flavor. Despite all the trials and amendments she had to make, there's a surprisingly sweet ending that left me completely satisfied. I just had to close my eyes and savor the moment when I finished reading Four Chambers! A very delightful read!

Never Say Goodbye - Book Tour and Review

                                 Never Say Goodbye
                               (Nancy's Curse, Book 1)
                                      by C.A. Bell
                              genre: Paranormal Romance

About the Book:

Sometimes white magic can turn dark. Even with the best intentions.

When Angelica placed a protective curse over her granddaughter, Nancy, in a bid to keep her safe from society and her own powers until she was old enough to understand, she had no idea of the consequences.

It’s October 31st, and a grown-up Nancy is holding her annual Halloween party. Only this year she strays away from her traditional festivities that include her famous Halloween punch, and dancing to the Monster Mash, and opts for a spookier night. She will be holding a séance with the help of her friends and her new Ouija board. Little does she know that the protective curse her grandmother secretly cast over twenty-seven years ago is lifted tonight, and her true powers are finally presented to her.

A spirit is summoned. But only time will tell just who he really is.

Excerpt

Leaning back in her chair, she places the board down in front of her and contemplates why anyone would invent such a strange-looking thing. Nancy isn’t new to all of this supernatural, sorcery stuff. She practiced white witchcraft. Her grandmother had gotten her into it when she was younger. The only childhood memories that Nancy ever recalled were the ones where she and her grandmother would wander through the herb garden picking specific herbs for certain cures and potions. None of them ever worked to Nancy’s knowledge, but still, she loved to think she was carrying on her grandmother’s ways. Witches and their history intrigued Nancy, but never had she considered the Ouija board. Having heard so many creepy stories about it actually working, and summoning spirits, Nancy stayed well clear of it. That was, until she could no longer resist the possibility of magic or some sort of mystical power being real. The practice of white magic had never resulted into anything more than beautifully-smelling concoctions, and enhanced flavoursome food and drink.
Nancy reaches into the box and pulls out the instructions. In the booklet, she’s introduced to the board, its uses and origins, and the fact that it isn’t a tool of the Devil. It’s ‘a device used by the ancient Chinese for talking with the dead.’
She smiles. Her grandmother had always told her that witches were perceived to be the Devil’s wenches. That’s why people hated them so much. She’d also told her that not all witches were evil, nor did they work for the Devil. They were women with powers, and men hated it, so they were associated with the Devil’s name in hope that civilisation would be fearful of them.
Suddenly saddened at the thought of her dear grandmother no longer being here, Nancy moves onto the next paragraph. It tells her that the more people - or ‘energy’- she has for the Ouija, the better. This is good; she’s invited three of her closest friends over, two of whom are bringing their other halves, so they should have enough wattage. She would have invited more but her dining table only seats six. Having deckchairs scattered about the place would have just killed the mood she was trying to create.
She skims through the rest of the passage until her eyes halt and backtrack to something rather alarming.
‘Never use the Ouija board in your home.’
Slightly unnerved, an invasion of goosebumps tickle her skin, resulting in a shiver. Her mind starts to wander. What if this does work? What if I call a spirit here and don’t know how to send it back? She shakes her reservations away along with the gooseflesh, and places the booklet face down on the table before heading faster than usual to the kitchen for a glass of wine. It was too late to be concerned about the warning. Her guests would be here soon, and she’d promised them all a spooky night.

My Thoughts on the Book

Somebody throw me in a cold shower please, because this is one hot read! While very short, it gets directly to the point with little fussing. This erotic little read harped on some dark fantasies I've had and is full of intrigue! There's definitely a cliffhanger at the end that just left me panting for more and I'm eagerly on the lookout for the second book of this series. My only complaint is that this book was too short, she could've definitely made it much longer. However, it makes for a nice, juicy short read that I thoroughly enjoyed!
