1-1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs, well beaten
2-1/4 cups sifted flour
1-1/2 tsp salt
1-1/2 cups buttermilk (or milk and 1 Tbsp vinegar, stir and let sit 5 min)
2 squares chocolate, melted
20 maraschino cherries, cut in half
Cream butter and sugar.
Melt chocolate and add to cream mixture.
Add the well beaten eggs.
Sift together flour and salt.
Alternately add the flour and buttermilk to creamed mixture.
Fold in the cherries.
Pour into a greased and floured 13x9 cake pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes or until toothpick comes clean.
For Frosting:
2 cups sugar
1 stick butter
2 squares chocolate
1 cup hot water
In med saucepan, blend the sugar, chocolate and hot water.
Boil to 236 degrees.
Remove from heat, add butter, cool, then beat.
